If you feel uncomfortable or unsafe in a situation, get out.
If you can avoid it, do not walk alone. Always have a friend with you.
If you are walking alone, talking on your cell phone is a good idea.
Practice memorizing license plates or identifying characteristics of strangers.
Always cross at crosswalks and dont hitchhike or accept rides from strangers.
Do not use earphones while walking, running, or bicycling. Your ears may help you avoid dangers your eyes may miss.
Wear bright colors and reflective material.
Stay in well-lit areas.
Avoid unpopulated areas and shortcuts through parks and vacant lots.
Walk close to the curb and stay away from parked cars, bushes or doorways where an attacker can hide.
Run or walk assertively and with confidence. Look directly at others and be observant, but keep your distance and keep moving. Attackers often look for someone that appears vulnerable.
Vary your route.
Know where open businesses or stores are located in case of emergency.
Know the locations of call boxes and emergency phones along your regular route.
Avoid danger, but dont be afraid to scream or call for help. Do not be shy!
Trust your gut . . . when in doubt, just get out.
